LP SmartSide doesn’t generate many repair calls, which is most of why we recommend it. But no wall is exempt from a falling limb, a thrown mower stone, or a delivery truck’s mirror, and engineered wood has one specific vulnerability worth respecting: raw edges. A board that gets gouged deep, or a field cut that some earlier crew never sealed, gives water a way into material that’s otherwise built to shrug it off.

Engineered wood repair is a spec job, not a caulk job.
The tempting shortcut on a damaged SmartSide board is filler and paint. It photographs fine and fails quietly, because the damage that matters on engineered wood is anywhere the treated shell has been opened. The correct repair takes the board out and puts a new one in with its cuts sealed, and it costs less than most people expect because the material handles cleanly.
Matching is the pleasant surprise. SmartSide’s textures and profiles are consistent run to run in a way natural wood never was, so a replacement board actually matches. On prefinished Diamond Kote walls, the color line means we can bring in boards in your exact color, with factory touch-up for the cut edges.
SmartSide fails at exactly one place: edges nobody sealed. So that’s where a real repair starts.
The repairs that aren’t impact damage are usually inherited install problems: joints butted tight with no gap, cuts left raw, fasteners overdriven through the face. We see them, we photograph them, and we tell you what’s cosmetic and what’s a slow leak into your wall.
That’s also where honest warranty guidance matters. Substrate problems on a correctly installed wall are LP’s fifty-year territory. Scratch, swell, or swap? Reading SmartSide damage.
Surface scuffs and shallow scratches that don’t get through the finish are touch-up territory: clean, seal, blend. On Diamond Kote finishes there’s a factory touch-up system for exactly this, and used correctly it disappears.
A gouge or crack that opens the board’s face or edge is a swap. The SmartGuard treatment protects the board as manufactured, and once impact has opened it, water has a path the treatment can’t cover. One board coming out and one going in is routine work for a crew that installs this material weekly.
Edge swelling is the diagnostic one. A board thickening at a butt joint or bottom edge means water has been getting into an unsealed cut, usually since the original install. The board is telling on the crew that hung it. We replace the swollen boards and seal every cut in the repair zone, which stops the pattern instead of relocating it.
If we find the same install faults wall-wide, we’ll say so with photos and give you the honest scope: sometimes a targeted repair pass corrects the risk points for reasonable money, and sometimes the right answer is a warranty and re-side conversation. Can a single LP SmartSide board be replaced?
Yes, cleanly. The material cuts and handles predictably, so a certified crew can take out one damaged board, slip in a matched replacement, seal its cuts, and fasten to spec without disturbing the wall around it. It’s one of the easier siding repairs there is when done by people who know the system.
Will the repair match my existing color?
On prefinished Diamond Kote walls we bring boards in your exact color line with factory touch-up for the edges, and the match is genuinely excellent. On field-painted SmartSide we feather paint into the surrounding wall, and if your paint has weathered enough to make the blend imperfect, we tell you before we start.
My SmartSide is swelling at the joints. What does that mean?
Water has found raw edges, almost always field cuts the original crew never sealed. The fix is replacing the swollen boards and sealing every cut in the repair area the way LP’s manual requires. Catch it early and it’s a contained repair rather than a wall problem.
Is my damage covered by LP’s warranty?
Depends on the cause. Substrate failures on a correctly installed wall fall under LP’s fifty-year prorated coverage, and prefinished color fade has its own thirty-year term. Damage from impacts or from an installer ignoring the spec isn’t LP’s responsibility. We’ll give you an honest read and document what you need for a claim.
Do you repair SmartSide that another company installed?
Constantly. Most repair calls we get are on other crews’ installs, and inherited spec violations are usually part of the story. We fix the damage, correct what’s fixable, and show you photos of anything wall-wide worth knowing about.
Does hail damage LP SmartSide?
Rarely. Impact resistance is one of the reasons we recommend the material, and hail that totals a vinyl wall often leaves SmartSide unmarked. Direct hits from real stones can still gouge it, so after a serious storm it’s worth the free look, and we’ll document honestly either way.
How fast can you get to a repair?
Anything with an open water path gets priority and a temporary seal if weather is coming. Cosmetic work gets a normal slot with a written price and a real date. The free look comes first either way.
Can you fix a SmartSide install that was done wrong?
Usually, yes. Unsealed cuts, missing gaps, and bad fastening are correctable board by board when caught before widespread swelling. We photograph what we find, fix the risk points to LP’s spec, and tell you honestly if any of it belongs in a claim against the original installer instead of on your bill.
