
The Ridge of Ice on Your Eave Is Not a Gutter Problem
Homeowners on the lake side of Haslett call us every winter about the ice hanging off the eave, and most of them think the gutter caused it. It did not. Attic heat did. Gutter has a real job in this story, and it is not the job people assign it. Knowing which part belongs to the trough and which part belongs to the attic saves you from paying for the wrong fix twice.
Where the ice actually comes from
Picture the roof in January with six inches of pack sitting on it. Under the middle of that pack, the decking is faintly warm, because heat from the living space has found its way into the attic and is pressing up through the sheathing. The bottom layer of snow melts against that warmth and the water starts downhill under the pack, which insulates it the whole way.
Then it reaches the overhang. The overhang sticks out past the heated wall of your house, so nothing is warming it. The water hits that cold stretch and freezes solid. Do that for four or five days running and you have built a ridge of ice sitting across the bottom three feet of your roof, growing a little every day the sun makes meltwater and the night takes it back.
Nothing about that sequence involves the gutter. The ridge would form on a house with the troughs taken down entirely. What the gutter does is give the ice a shelf to build on and a place to be seen from the driveway, which is why it gets the blame. The real culprits are heat escaping into the attic and not enough air movement to carry it back out.
What the trough can and cannot do about it
Here is the honest division of labor. A gutter cannot stop a dam from forming, and any product sold to you on that promise is oversold. Once the ice ridge is there, the trough sitting under it becomes a solid block of ice with roughly the load of a filing cabinet hanging off your fascia board.
What gutter does control is everything happening at the eave in the weeks either side of the freeze. A trough that drains fully in November has nothing standing in it when the first hard night arrives. A trough packed with leaf litter is already holding a few gallons that turn to ice the moment the temperature drops, and the ice starts working outward on the hangers from day one.
Pitch matters for the same reason. A run that has sagged in the middle keeps a puddle in that low spot in every season, and in winter that puddle becomes the seed of the block. Hidden hangers on tight spacing, screwed into solid wood, hold a loaded trough where spikes driven into a fascia already drilled twice do not. Sizing the outlets for the week everything lets go
People size gutter for rain. Around here the number that matters is the March melt. There is usually one stretch, sometimes only four or five days, when the accumulated pack on the whole roof surrenders at once and every outlet on the house has to move that volume before it finds another route.
The small rectangular downspouts that builders stapled on for decades are the choke point in that week. A three by four outlet carries substantially more water per minute, and on most Haslett houses stepping up to it adds very little to the job while removing the backup entirely. When a corner keeps overflowing every spring, an undersized outlet is the first thing we look at, ahead of the trough itself.
Sometimes one outlet is not the answer regardless of size, because a wide roof plane is feeding a single corner. Then the fix is a second outlet somewhere along the run rather than a bigger one at the end. We would rather say that at the free roof look than hang the same trough the last outfit hung and let you find out in March.
Where the water lands once it leaves the downspout
The melt does not stop being your problem when it exits the downspout. On the older houses near the water, basements were built for a different standard of drainage than what they sit in now, and a downspout emptying at the foundation corner is soaking that ground every single thaw.
Extensions are cheap and they work. Getting the discharge well clear of the wall, and downhill of it, takes the load off the foundation in the exact week when the soil is already saturated and the frost line is still holding water near the surface. It is the least glamorous line on any scope we write and one of the most useful.
What extensions cannot fix is grade. If the yard slopes back toward the house, the water goes where the ground sends it no matter how far the extension reaches. We say so when we see it, and we point you toward the right trade rather than pretending aluminum will solve a dirt problem. A gutter cannot stop a dam. It can decide whether the eave enters winter empty and draining or already holding a few gallons.
The order we would spend money in
If your eave has been growing ice every February, spend in this sequence. First, look at the attic. Air sealing the gaps where warm house air leaks up, and getting intake at the soffit balanced against exhaust at the ridge, addresses the cause rather than the symptom. It is frequently the cheaper of the two conversations, which surprises people.
Second, protect the eave itself. Self-sealing ice and water membrane run wide enough at the bottom of the roof to sit inside the warm wall line gives the backed up water nothing to exploit when a dam does form. That work belongs to a roof, not a gutter, and it happens at replacement time.
Third, deal with the trough. Correct pitch, hangers that hold a loaded run, outlets sized for the melt, discharge clear of the house. Do it in that order and each step earns its money. Do it backwards and you buy new gutter, watch the same ice appear the following January, and conclude that gutter was a waste. It was not a waste. It was third.

Should I take my gutters down for the winter?
No. You would still get the ice ridge, and you would trade it for meltwater running straight down the wall and into the ground at the foundation all season. A trough that drains properly in fall is better through winter than no trough at all.
Do heat cables fix this?
They melt a channel through the ice so water has an escape route. That is useful on a stubborn problem section, and it is a bandage on the cause. We treat cable as something you add after the attic work, not instead of it.
Can I knock the ice off myself?
Please do not go up a ladder onto icy ground with a hammer. Chipping at a dam damages shingles and gutter both, and the fall is the real risk. A roof rake used from the ground to pull the pack back off the lower courses is the safe version.
